Fibromyalgia requires self-reported symptoms, a physical examination based on patient history. The most important is the ACR criteria. It takes an average of 5 years for FM patient to get an accurate diagnosis. Some doctors are not adequately informed or educated about FM.

FM needs also an extensive investigation which costs a lot. Unfortunately if the presence of other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus appear FM diagnosis can not be given.

When receive of diagnosis of FM the patient meet the following diagnostic criteria: widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum duration of three months and tenderness or pain in at least 11 of the 18 specified tender points when pressure is applied.

FM is a disorder of central proccessing with neuroendocrine/neurotransmiteri dysregulation. The pain is amplified to the abnormal sensory processing in the central nervous system.

Unfortunately has shown that there are many multiple physiological abnormalities in the FM patient:increased levels of substance P in the spinal cord, low levels of blood flow to the thalamus region of brain, HPA axis hypofunction, low levels of serotonin and tryptophan and abnormalities in cytokine function.

Genetic factors may predispose individuals to a genetic susceptibility to FM. There will be also made other tests testing the areas of brain imaging and neurosurgery in order to detect the FM presence. The need for lifestyle adaptation represent one of the most important factors in improving the symptoms of FM.

An important component of treatment is an empathetic physician which works with the patient and knows the diagnosis and treatment of FM. A part of potential treatment program may be a conventional medical intervention. An important role in FM treatment are alternative treatments, nutrition, relaxation techniques and exercise.

Nowadays more and more people suffer from fibromyalgia but science discovered many possibilities of healing it.
